Frequently asked questions

What is SCB?

Sober & Curious Boston (SCB) is a nonprofit community that organizes, hosts, and connects people to social events, activities, and experiences that are not centered on alcohol. Our focus is authentic connection, physical and mental wellness, and creating welcoming spaces where people can build friendships and have fun without the pressure to drink. While some events take place at public venues where alcohol may be available or consumed by others, SCB events are alcohol- and drug-free for participants. We ask attendees to arrive free from impairment and refrain from consuming alcohol or other impairing substances during our events.

Do I need to be sober to join?

No. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their relationship with alcohol. Our community includes people who are sober, sober curious, in recovery, cutting back, or simply looking for social opportunities that are not centered on drinking. The only expectation is that attendees respect the alcohol- and drug-free nature of our events.

What kinds of events do you host?

We offer a wide variety of activities, including hikes, walks, coffee meetups, fitness classes, kayaking and outdoor adventures, tennis and recreational sports, creative workshops, comedy nights, wellness experiences, and community social gatherings. We strive to offer events for a variety of interests, activity levels, and comfort levels.

How do I join and stay informed?

The best way to stay informed is by joining our email list. Subscribers receive information about upcoming events, community news, volunteer opportunities, and new programs. You can also follow us on Meetup, Instagram, and join our private Facebook community, but our email list is the best way to stay up to date.

Can I attend alone?

Absolutely. In fact, many people attend their first SCB event by themselves. Our events are intentionally welcoming, and we know meeting new people can feel intimidating. We work to create an inclusive environment where conversations happen naturally and newcomers feel comfortable.

Are events alcohol- and drug-free?

Yes. All SCB events are alcohol- and drug-free for participants. Some venues may serve alcohol to the general public, but attendees are expected to arrive free from impairment and refrain from consuming alcohol or other impairing substances during the event.

How large are your events?

Event size varies depending on the activity and venue. Some events may be limited to a small group, while larger community hikes, walks, and social gatherings may include 50 or more participants. Each event listing will include applicable attendance limits or registration requirements.

Where are events held?

We currently host events throughout Boston, Greater Boston, the South Shore, Cape Cod, and surrounding communities. As our volunteer network grows, we plan to continue expanding throughout Massachusetts.

Do events cost money? Do I need to RSVP?

Many SCB events are free, while others have costs based on the venue, activity, or partner organization. Pricing, registration requirements, and event details are always listed in each event description. Even when an RSVP is not required, we strongly encourage registering so we can plan appropriately and communicate any event updates.

Is SCB a nonprofit?

Yes. SCB is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to building community through alcohol-free connection, wellness, and social experiences.

How can I support SCB?

As a nonprofit, we rely on the generosity of individuals, businesses, foundations, and community partners to make our work possible. There is no membership fee to participate, but donations of any amount directly support community programming, events, volunteer initiatives, and future growth. We welcome one-time donations, recurring monthly donations, corporate sponsorships, corporate matching gifts, foundation support, in-kind donations, and event sponsorships. If you are interested in supporting our mission or learning more about sponsorship opportunities, please email info@sobercuriousboston.com.

How can I collaborate with SCB?

We are always looking to build relationships with organizations, businesses, wellness professionals, activity leaders, nonprofits, and community partners who share our mission of creating meaningful alcohol-free social opportunities. Whether you are interested in hosting an event, sponsoring a program, offering a member benefit, speaking at an event, or exploring another creative partnership, we would love to connect. Please email info@sobercuriousboston.com.

How can I volunteer or get involved?

Volunteers are essential to our mission. We welcome support with event operations, community outreach, marketing and communications, fundraising, grant writing, wellness and activity leadership, community partnerships, administrative support, and future leadership opportunities, including serving on our Board of Directors. If you are interested in getting involved, please email info@sobercuriousboston.com.

Is SCB a recovery or support group?

No. While many members are in recovery, SCB is not a clinical program, treatment provider, therapy group, or recovery meeting. There is never an expectation to share personal experiences or discuss recovery. Our mission is to create opportunities for community, connection, wellness, and fun through alcohol-free social experiences.

Who can I contact with questions?
