Can I come alone? Absolutely. In fact, most people do. You can be nervous. You don't need your relationship with alcohol figured out. You can take your time. There is space for you here.

Thinking About Your First Sober & Curious Boston Event?

If you're nervous about coming alone, wondering whether SCB is for you, or just not sure what to expect, you're in the right place.

If you've been following Sober & Curious Boston but haven't made it to an event yet, you're not alone. We hear from people all the time who want to come but feel a little nervous about taking that first step.

The question we hear most often? "Can I come alone?"

Absolutely. In fact, most people do.

Most People Come Alone

The majority of people arrive at their first SCB event without knowing anyone. Even many of our regulars still come to events solo.

Making friends as an adult can be hard, and walking into a new group can feel awkward. The good news is that almost everyone around you understands that feeling. They're there for the same reason you are: to meet people, try something new, and find genuine connection.

We don't typically do formal introductions or put anyone on the spot, but because so many people come alone, we encourage everyone to introduce themselves to the people around them. Just show up. A smile and a simple hello are usually all it takes to get the conversation started.

You Don't Need a Label to Belong Here

You don't have to identify as sober or in recovery to come to SCB.

Whether you're sober, sober curious, moderating, taking a break, reevaluating your relationship with alcohol, supporting someone you care about, or simply looking for community outside traditional drinking culture, you're welcome here.

All we ask is that you don't drink at our events or attend under the influence of substances.

You don't need to explain why you're here. You just need to show up.

There's No Pressure

Come exactly as you are.

You don't have to talk about your relationship with alcohol. You don't have to be outgoing. You don't have to stay for the entire event, and you definitely don't have to become best friends with everyone on day one.

Some people jump right in. Others take a little while to warm up. Both are completely normal.

You can ease into this community at your own pace.

Find the Event That Feels Right for You

Not every SCB event has the same vibe, and that's intentional.

If walking into a larger social event sounds intimidating, start with something activity-based. A walk, hike, fitness class, workshop, or other shared experience gives you something to do while conversation happens naturally.

If you prefer smaller groups or quieter settings, look for one of those. If you love a crowd, we've got those too.

There's no "right" way to participate in SCB.

Give Friendship a Little Time

One of the best things about SCB is watching real friendships form. People meet at one event, recognize each other at the next, exchange numbers, make plans, and gradually become part of each other's lives.

But real connection doesn't always happen instantly.

Familiar faces matter. Shared experiences matter. Showing up again matters.

If your first event doesn't immediately result in a new best friend, that doesn't mean it didn't work. Sometimes the magic happens on your second, third, or fifth time through the door.

Nervous? So Was Our Founder.

Before SCB's very first event, founder Les considered canceling it more than once because she was nervous about showing up alone.

Later, she managed to go to the wrong meeting location for a large group hike. More than 50 attendees and their dogs found the right place. She was the only one who didn't.

Everyone survived. Everyone laughed. And they still had a great day.

So if you're worried about being the awkward one, you're in good company.
